On 24th June, the Pomeranian branch of our Association took part in the First Cistercian Fair, a neighbourhood festival in the Oliwa district of Gdańsk. Fun fact: the Cistercian Abbey founded here in the 12th century was likely established by monks from Denmark. For centuries, the presence of the Cistercians shaped Oliwa’s character—they practised various crafts, engaged in fishing using the nearby stream, and ran a fulling mill.
The First Cistercian Fair was inspired by medieval Oliwa and marked the revival of its market traditions. The event brought together artisans, creators, enthusiasts, and historians passionate about Oliwa’s past, who shared fascinating stories and legends. Local musicians, theatre groups, and choirs performed, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Our friends at the Cysteria café served homemade food, giving the fair a cosy, community picnic feel.
Emilia Pawłusz and Anna Kępa from our Association led weaving workshops, where visitors could create colourful bands using a backstrap loom.
A heartfelt thank you to all participants and organisers—especially Ms Ewa and Ms Maria from Cysteria café, as well as the Stara Oliwa Association, based at Dom Zarazy, for inviting us to this wonderful event!
