As part of the Miller’s Day celebrations, we visited the ‘Łęczycka Zagroda Chłopska’ open-air museum in Kwiatkówek (Łęczyca County) to prepare a fun zone for visitors. A rich programme of attractions referring to traditional plebeian games provided a lot of fun and healthy competition. The games were led by our president Anna Raczkowska.
‘Plebeian games’ are traditional games and competitions that the people of the village used to enjoy. They were popular, especially during holidays, fairs and festivals. Often whole communities were involved in the games, which provided an opportunity for competition, entertainment and integration.
Traditional games and competitions
Visitors to the Open Air Museum had the opportunity to take part in competitions such as the family tug-of-war. This is a classic competition in which two teams try to pull the rope to their side. Participants also practised accuracy while throwing bags filled with grain. Fishing for wooden fish with fishing rods which required dexterity was also on offer.
A large-format tic-tac-toe game
There were also strategy games. A large-format tic-tac-toe game was set up on the playground and quickly attracted both younger and older participants. The competition generated a lot of excitement and laughter.
